As the dealer draws cards, if the card matches one of the spaces on a player’s game board they are to cover it with one of the poker chips. If after the dealer calls out 25 cards and no one has scored 5 in a row, the dealer wins. A reader named Hamp Stevens sent this conundrum to Martin Gardner, who published it in his Mathematical Magic Show (1965). The dealer is to draw cards, one at a time, from the top of the deck. Players only place a chip on their boards if the card called falls in one of the two rows marked by the wager chip. The dealer turns over cards one at a time, calling them out.
